Church Square and Cemetary Mill

Formerly called Poirier Street (Pear Street)

The mill on the right was called Cemetary Mill because it surrounded the church before its transfer to the “Sous Remuets” site in 1831. In the 20s, the mill was converted into a brewery.

The village had thirteen mills distributed along the River Auxance, but had no windmills.

To the left, the ancient covered market sheltered the parish hearse and pedlars on weekly market days. It was demolished in 1923 and replaced by the War Memorial.

The present town hall, built in an area next to Auxances Castle, was inaugurated in July 1973.

Between 1939 and 1940, Henri Coanda, an aeronautical engineer of Romanian origin and owner of Auxances Castle, tested several aircraft prototypes in the fields behind the town hall.
